Mohammad Sadiq Khan, the Pakistani Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Afghanistan, arrived in Tehran to meet and consult with officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the latest developments in the region, especially Afghanistan, and ways to expand bilateral cooperation in this area.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Tehran: According to IRNA, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, who arrived in Tehran a few hours ago, is scheduled to meet and discuss with senior Iranian officials, including the Iranian Foreign Minister and the Ministry's Director General for South Asia. The main focus of the visit is to review the latest developments in the region, focusing on Afghanistan, and ways to expand bilateral cooperation.
Pakistani media outlets have reported, citing diplomatic sources, that the purpose of Sadiq Khan's visit is "negotiations on issues related to Afghanistan" as well as increasing regional cooperation to ensure peace and stability.
These media outlets have emphasized that this visit follows the recent four-nation meeting in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, with representatives from Pakistan, China, Russia and Iran, and is of particular importance for continuing diplomatic engagement. It is expected that Mohammad Sadiq Khan’s meetings in Tehran will be based on the results of that meeting and will further advance the process of regional dialogue on Afghanistan.
According to reports, the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Special Envoy will hold key talks with his Iranian counterparts during his stay in Tehran and will emphasize Pakistan’s commitment to regional dialogue and finding joint solutions to Afghan issues.
Earlier, on September 11 of this year, the special representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states on Afghanistan met for two days in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. Also, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, a joint meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, China, Pakistan and Russia was held in New York, focusing on Afghanistan.
