Wali Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), was killed in an airstrike in Kabul, the Pakistani newspaper Pakistan Observer reported, citing security sources.
According to the newspaper, Qari Saifullah Mehsud and Khalid Mehsud, two of his possible successors, were also killed in the drone strike on his car. Eyewitnesses claimed that Mehsud was moving freely around the city at the time of the attack.
However, no official body in Afghanistan or Pakistan has confirmed the death of the Pakistani Taliban leader.
The incident comes as military operations against the TTP leadership have intensified in the border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Analysts warn that Mehsud's possible death could lead to widespread retaliation or a rift within the Pakistani Taliban leadership.
The Pakistan Observer newspaper also reported that the attack was accompanied by two powerful explosions and gunfire in the eighth district of Kabul, causing panic among residents. Some residents have reported hearing planes flying over Kabul on social media.
Unconfirmed reports said several targets were hit in and around Kabul; If confirmed, this could indicate an increase in military tensions between Islamabad and Kabul.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, wrote on X-ray on Thursday evening:
"The sound of an explosion was heard in Kabul, but there is nothing to worry about. The situation is normal and investigations are underway."
Meanwhile, the Indian media Republic World reported that two massive explosions occurred in eastern Kabul late Thursday night, possibly caused by an airstrike.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Army Public Relations (ISPR) chief Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry is scheduled to hold a press conference in Peshawar on Friday to explain the details of the operation.
Security observers believe that if Noor Wali Mehsud's death is confirmed, the incident could be a turning point in tense relations between Islamabad and Kabul. Investigations show that the Pakistani government has increased its military and diplomatic pressure on the Islamic Emirate in recent months because of TTP members taking refuge in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, experts warn that the continuation of such attacks could lead to an escalation of border clashes and a diplomatic crisis between the two countries; This could further endanger the stability of the region.
