Huge explosion in eastern Cairo; Egyptian authorities say it was “unintentional”

A huge explosion erupted in eastern Cairo, the Egyptian capital, sending a column of white smoke into the sky hours before the start of a regional Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Egyptian authorities immediately dismissed rumors of a terrorist attack after the explosion. They stressed that the incident was unintentional and likely caused by construction work or safety tests on the region’s new monorail line.

While posts on social media pointed to an explosion at a military base, the authorities’ official emphasis is that the incident was a controlled or accidental event, the exact causes of which are under investigation.
