Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Minister of Legal and International Affairs of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, last night (October 18) in a television interview, discussed Iran's extensive diplomatic movements regarding the termination of Security Council Resolution 2231.
Iran's extensive diplomatic movements
He said in this regard: "We have implemented extensive diplomatic movements in the past few days, and considering that Saturday is the end of Resolution 2231 and this resolution must be terminated, we tried to involve a wide range of countries in terms of the hypocrisy and duplicity of Western countries and the United States in activating the snapback, along with our legal interpretation.
Gharibabadi continued: “Two days ago, at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit, more than 121 non-aligned countries confirmed that Resolution 2231 should end on Saturday, and it is very important that these countries agree with our interpretation.”
He added: “In addition, 21 countries in the Group of Friends of the United Nations Charter issued a statement in New York, stating that Resolution 2231 will end on Saturday, and that countries are not required to implement sanctions that they have imposed unjustly and illegally.”
Letter from Iran, Russia, and China
The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister stated: “The sanctions that Western countries and the United States claim to have imposed through the snapback mechanism have no legal status, and UN member states should not implement these sanctions.”
He referred to the issuance of a very important statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry in this regard and added: Iran, Russia and China will jointly send a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council on Saturday, highlighting the fact that this resolution has expired and that countries are not bound by the expired sanctions resolutions of the Security Council.
According to media reports, the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Russia and China, following the action of the three European countries in sending a letter to the Security Council to prepare the snapback mechanism, also signed a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and President of the Security Council on Monday, September 10, in Tianjin, China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
Gharibabadi also added: "We will continue our efforts to bring a wide range of countries with us in this different interpretation of the law, which unfortunately is supported by a number of Western countries, that sanctions that have been terminated from a legal perspective should not be implemented, and this is our duty, and a wide range of countries also support us in this regard."
Iran's nuclear issue at the IAEA
He also said about the Iranian nuclear issue at the IAEA: With the end of Resolution 2231, the issue of Iran at the IAEA will also change.
Gharibabadi explained: The IAEA Director General previously presented a report on Iran's implementation of its JCPOA obligations every three months, and given the termination of the resolution, this report will naturally no longer be published, and the Director General has no obligation or commitment to keep the issue of the JCPOA and the presentation of a report on Iran's implementation of its obligations under the JCPOA on the agenda of the IAEA Board of Governors.
