Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): US President Donald Trump announced this morning (Thursday, Oct 30) that the United States will immediately begin testing nuclear weapons.
The news was released just an hour before Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and could spark a new arms race between the world's major powers.
The United States has not conducted any nuclear tests since 1992. If Trump implements this decision, the arms race between the superpowers may be reignited.
Trump wrote: "The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country. This success including a complete modernization and modernization of existing weapons was achieved during my first term in office. I hated the sheer destructive power of these weapons, but I had no choice! Russia is second, China is third, but they will catch up with us in five years.”
“Because of the tests of other countries, I have ordered the Department of War to begin testing our nuclear weapons on a par with them. This will begin immediately,” he added.
Trump referred to the tests of “other countries.” But there are no public reports of a full-scale nuclear test by Russia or China.
He was likely referring to Russia’s recent test of a new long-range missile. “We have a nuclear submarine the best in the world right off their coast,” Trump said earlier this week, when asked about that test by a reporter.
The only country to have conducted a major nuclear test in recent years is North Korea.
A global effort to ban nuclear tests to prevent further proliferation resulted in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in 1996, but nine countries, including the United States, did not ratify it.
Since then, only a few countries, including India, Pakistan, and North Korea, have conducted full-scale nuclear tests.
