The US Department of War (Pentagon) has allocated $2 billion to Elon Musk’s space company, SpaceX, to develop satellites capable of tracking missiles and aircraft. The plan is part of the Trump administration’s so-called “Golden Dome” program.

Musk’s company has also been linked to two other satellite companies that deal with relaying sensitive communications and tracking vehicles, respectively.
The award of contracts to SpaceX is a sign that the feud between the two, which first became public in early July, has now at least partially healed, but observers say the development will not help resolve criticism from the Pentagon and warnings about overreliance on one contractor for US national security projects.
The Golden Dome concept, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, was unveiled at the White House in May by Trump and his Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegsett, and is set to become a complex system of satellites and weapons that is claimed to be capable of destroying incoming missiles before they hit American targets.
