Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to Newsweek, Obama praised Mamdani's campaign in a phone call and said that he could serve as an advisor to him in the future.
Newsweek adds: Mamdani, who won the Democratic nomination from former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, has shaken up the political scene in this American city and is now ahead of Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the polls.
This Muslim state assemblyman has been praised by many progressive youth as well as senior Democrats, although on the other hand, conservatives and some moderates are concerned about Mamdani taking the helm of the city's leadership.
Democrats have also supported Mamdani’s campaign at the local, state and national levels, but older members and key figures in the party have been more cautious in their support.
Obama spoke with Mamdani for 30 minutes on Saturday, according to sources familiar with the matter. It was reportedly the second call between the two since Mamdani’s candidacy. The first came after Mamdani won the Democratic primary in June.
Obama expressed his interest in Mamdani’s victory in the recent call, the sources said, and discussed the challenges of building a new team and delivering on his campaign promises.
The former U.S. president reportedly told Mamdani that his campaign was “visible and admirable.”
The 34-year-old Democratic candidate has garnered national attention for his smart social media campaign and ways of reaching out to voters. Mamdani reportedly thanked Obama for the call.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, told reporters in response to Mamdani’s vote: “We continue to have conversations.”
Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) wrote in a memo on October 28: “Hakim Jeffries’ [House Minority Leader] endorsement of Zahran Mamdani confirms: The Democratic Party has been hijacked by the far left. Mamdani is an anti-American socialist whose agenda comes straight from the Communist Manifesto. He is openly anti-police and is funded by groups affiliated with terrorist organizations like Hamas. His program of defunding the police, raising taxes, and embracing socialism is not in line with the needs of the American people.”
“The fact that he [Obama] called us [Mamdani] and then it went viral sent a strong message to the political elite, the business elite and the voters, and gave Mamdani credibility,” Patrick Gaspard, a Mamdani adviser who served as Obama’s political director in 2008, told the Times earlier this week.
“It was great to be in Brooklyn today with Zahran Mamdani for a service at Hudson Church,” New York City Rep. Letitia James Thornwall wrote in a Platform X post on Saturday. “This is the last weekend for early voting before Election Day! Get out and vote and let’s make Zahran Mamdani the next mayor of New York City!”
Zahran Kwame Mamdani is a New York state assemblyman, politician, and social activist who was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York City with his family when he was seven.
He is the first Ugandan and third Muslim in the history of the New York State Assembly, and sees his mission as representing and making the voices of marginalized communities heard.
