New York City mayoral early voting ends; Zahran Mamdani, a Muslim Democrat candidate, is at the top of the race
With the end of early voting for the New York City mayoral election; Zahran Mamdani, a Muslim Democrat candidate, is at the top of the race. If he wins, he will be the first Muslim mayor of this metropolis.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): On the eve of the New York City mayoral election, early voting ended with the participation of more than 735,000 citizens; a figure that, according to the New York Times, is the highest early in-person turnout in the history of a non-presidential election in the city.

On the last day of early voting (Sunday), about 151,000 people voted, which was the highest number recorded since the beginning of this phase. Also, the participation of young people under the age of 35 increased significantly in the final days, and more than 45,000 people in this age group cast their votes on Sunday alone. This trend caused the average age of voters to decrease to 50 years.

Zahran Mamdani leads
In this year’s race for New York City mayor, Democratic candidate Zahran Mamdani is leading his two rivals, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. Early voting is reportedly four times higher than in the 2021 election.

Zahran Mamdani, a Muslim politician and immigrant of Indian descent, is running on the slogan “New York for All” and has focused on social justice, supporting immigrants, and empowering the younger generation and the underprivileged. If he wins, he will be New York’s first Muslim mayor.

Despite his popularity among young people and minorities, Mamdani’s campaign has been met with a wave of anti-Islamic rhetoric and Islamophobic threats. Some media outlets have reported that US President Donald Trump has indirectly endorsed his rival, Andrew Cuomo, although Trump has stated in an interview that he “is not a Cuomo supporter.”

State elections in the shadow of the federal government shutdown
The New York mayoral election is being held at the same time as state elections in several other US states, including governors, councils and legislatures. The election is the first serious test of voters' reaction to the current administration's performance. The federal government shutdown due to the failure of Congress to pass the 2026 budget bill has added to the importance of the election.
