Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday (November 4) that relations between Beijing and Venezuela are "based on national sovereignty" and that no country has the right to interfere in them.
"China-Venezuela cooperation is not aimed at any third country and will not be influenced by any external party," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a press conference in Beijing.
His comments were made in response to a question about reports that the government of Nicolas Maduro is negotiating with China, Russia and Iran to purchase missiles, drones and other military equipment to strengthen its defense capabilities against possible US attacks.
Mao continued, referring to US raids on suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean Sea, saying, “China has a clear position on the US use of force to deal with so-called drug cartels. We support international cooperation to combat transnational crimes, but we oppose the use of force in international relations.”
“Beijing opposes actions that undermine peace and stability in the Latin American and Caribbean region, and opposes unilateral and excessive operations against other countries’ ships,” he added.
In recent weeks, Washington has carried out more than a dozen naval raids on suspected drug-smuggling vessels, mostly in the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans, resulting in the deaths of at least 64 people.
Mao Ning concluded by emphasizing, “We hope the US will use the path of bilateral and multilateral judicial and legal cooperation to enforce the law, rather than through military action.”
Reuters recently reported that the United States is reviving a massive Cold War-era military base in the Caribbean that could be a prelude to military operations in Venezuela, according to military sources and satellite images.
According to the report, the base was once one of the largest US naval bases in the world and now, according to a military official, could be used to assemble equipment and troops due to its strategic location and large size.
