Earthquake in northern Afghanistan leaves 26 dead and over 1,000 injured
The World Health Organization has announced that at least 26 people, including 18 men and 8 women, have died and 1,144 others have been injured following the recent earthquake in northern Afghanistan.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The earthquake has destroyed 430 houses. The dead include 13 in Samangan, 12 in Balkh and one in Sar-e-Pul, and the injured include 635 in Balkh, 418 in Samangan, 58 in Kunduz, 16 in Sar-e-Pul, 14 in Baghlan and 3 in Jawzjan.

The World Health Organization added that several health facilities in Samangan and Balkh have suffered minor damage, but emergency operations are ongoing and health and relief teams have been mobilized to provide services to the affected.

The organization has declared the landslide in the Tashqarghan gorge in Khulm district and the cut-off of the access road to Marmol district in Balkh province as major relief challenges, saying that these obstacles have slowed down the process of transferring the injured and delivering emergency aid.

The report indicates that health centers in Balkh and Samangan need more medical equipment and emergency personnel, and urgent support for these centers is necessary to treat the injured. The World Health Organization has emphasized that a comprehensive assessment in all affected districts is necessary to determine the true scale of damage and humanitarian needs, and coordinated national and regional efforts to help displaced families must continue.

The earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, shook the northern provinces of the country at around 12:59 p.m. on Sunday (November 2), and its epicenter was reported to be in Khulm district of Samangan province. The incident occurred about two months after an earthquake in the east of the country that killed nearly 2,000 people and injured more than 3,000 others.
