Zahran Mamdani’s All-Female Transition Team; A New Chapter in New York City
Zahran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and New York City Mayor-elect, unveiled her all-female transition team at a press conference in Queens, setting the stage for implementing one of the most ambitious city policy platforms in a generation.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: The team is headed by Alana Leopold as executive director. Other prominent members of the group include: Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor; Lina Khan, former chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission; Grace Bonilla, president and CEO of United Way; and Melanie Hartzog, former deputy mayor for Health and Human Services.

Mamdani emphasized in her speech: “We will build a government that is as capable and compassionate, led by integrity, and as hardworking as millions of New Yorkers.” He added that his team has 57 days to prepare for the official inauguration on January 1.

With the victory, Zahran Mamdani will become New York’s first Muslim mayor, the first African-born mayor, the first mayor from South Asia and the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century.

However, the new administration faces serious challenges. Among them are repeated threats from US President Donald Trump, who has said that he will slash federal funding for the city if Mamdani takes office. Trump wrote on his social media platform that it is “highly unlikely” that New York will receive more than basic needs and called Mamdani a “communist.”

According to the state auditor’s 2025 report, the federal budget for fiscal year 2026 is estimated at about $7.4 billion, which is 6.4% of the city’s total spending.

Acknowledging the difficulties ahead, including navigating municipal bureaucracy and dealing with a hostile Trump administration, Mamdani declared that he has full confidence in his and his team's ability to fulfill campaign promises.
