UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Abu Muhammad al-Julani
The UN Security Council on Thursday lifted sanctions on Abu Muhammad al-Julani, also known as Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the Syrian transitional government, by adopting a resolution proposed by the United States. The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favor and China abstained.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-International Service: The text of the resolution states that Ahmed al-Sharaa and Anas Khattab, the Syrian Interior Minister, will be removed from the list of sanctions related to ISIS and al-Qaeda.

The lifting of sanctions will include the lifting of travel restrictions, the release of assets and the lifting of arms embargoes.

Al-Julani was previously one of the leaders of al-Qaeda and the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (formerly al-Nusra). The group was removed from Washington's list of terrorist groups in July.

China responded to the decision by saying that the US-proposed resolution “did not address the legitimate concerns of all parties regarding Syria” and forced the council to adopt it.

According to the White House, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host Al-Jolani on November 10.

This will be Al-Jolani’s second visit to the United States; the first was in September, as part of a UN meeting.

Trump had previously said that Al-Jolani had made “good progress” on the path to peace in Syria.

While the Israeli regime occupies parts of Syrian territory, Trump has expressed hope that Syria will join the ranks of Arab countries that have normalized their relations with Tel Aviv within the framework of the agreements known as the “Abraham Pact.”

A Syrian official had previously stated that Damascus expects to finalize security and military agreements with Israel in 2025. Since December, the Israeli regime has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory, and the Syrian government has not officially responded.
