Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Abu Muhammad al-Julani (Ahmad al-Shara), the interim president of Syria, arrived in Washington this morning (Sunday, November 9) at the head of a delegation. He had gone to New York in September to attend the General Assembly meeting, but this is his first official visit to US soil to meet with officials in the country.
Yesterday, the US government removed the names of al-Julani and his Interior Minister, Anas Khattab, from the terrorism list after 13 years. The US State Department statement said: "The removal of the names of Ahmad al-Shara and Anas Khattab from the terrorism list is due to the progress and positive changes that Syrian leaders have shown in recent months."
According to Western sources, al-Julani is scheduled to join the US-led anti-ISIS coalition during this trip.
Upon his arrival in Washington, he played a basketball game with Brad Cooper (CENTCOM commander) and some American military officials, along with his government's Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani.
On the other hand, political sources in Washington and Damascus say that lifting the extensive sanctions known as the "Caesar Act" is at the top of Ahmed Al-Shara's priorities during this trip.
