Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned ministers last week that he would reprimand ministers for being late or absent from meetings, the ministers in question received a notice on Sunday evening detailing the reprimands that would be imposed on them immediately.
Yedioth Aharonot reported that they were told: “Following the increase in ministers’ lateness and absences from cabinet meetings, the prime minister has ordered the cabinet secretary to inform the ministers of the following: Any minister who arrives late to a cabinet meeting or is absent without the cabinet secretary’s prior permission will not be allowed to submit a draft bill related to his ministry for discussion at the cabinet meeting to be held next week.”
In addition to restricting the presentation of proposals at cabinet meetings, the announcement states: “Any minister who is absent or late from cabinet meetings twice without the cabinet secretary’s prior permission will not be allowed to travel outside Israel at the cabinet’s expense and at the prime minister’s discretion.” The announcement also states that “the cabinet secretary will inform the relevant ministers of their lateness and absence from cabinet meetings.”
At the previous cabinet meeting, Netanyahu was furious that only 12 ministers were present and threatened to “disgrace” them. “How many ministers do we have in the cabinet?” he asked when told “25,” he replied, “I only see 20.”
Over the past three weeks, the Israeli prime minister has repeatedly expressed his anger at the start of cabinet meetings, citing delays and absenteeism.
After threatening a public scandal, Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karai told Netanyahu, “This is a stick,” and then asked, “What is a turd?” Netanyahu replied, “Maybe we should let the media in again.”
“This is a turd,” one minister said. “So we’ll start with the stick for now and then we’ll see the turd.”
At a meeting two weeks ago, Netanyahu also ordered Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs to reprimand ministers who fail to attend meetings. He had previously issued instructions in June last year, establishing a procedure under which anyone who misses more than one meeting without permission in a given term will be banned from traveling outside the occupied territories in the following term. The punishment has not yet been implemented.
