Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): US President Donald Trump signed a budget package to reopen the federal government on Wednesday evening (November 12), ending the longest government shutdown in history.
According to CNN, this final approval came a few hours after the US House of Representatives approved the agreement reached between Republicans and moderate Democrats in the Senate by a vote of 222 to 209.
Six Democrats voted in favor of the bill, while two Republicans voted against it. One Democrat and one Republican also abstained from the bill.
The deal will keep the government open through January and ensure that some key agencies will receive funding through the 2026 fiscal year.
The deal, which ended a record-breaking 43-day congressional shutdown, also reverses the massive layoffs Trump imposed during the shutdown. It paves the way for paying government workers and resuming the vital food and nutrition services that tens of millions of Americans depend on.
The signing of the bill ended a four-day effort to pass the budget bill. The effort began when eight Democratic senators backed down and reached a deal with Republicans, concerned about the growing economic fallout of the shutdown. The deal secures a Senate vote in early December on expiring Obamacare subsidies, a key focus of Democrats’ demands during the shutdown. But the chances of a vote to extend these subsidies succeeding are slim, a fact that has sparked strong reactions across the Democratic Party.
