Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced in a message on Telegram that “Ukrainian air defense is countering a massive attack on the capital” and reported that at least two people were injured in the Dnipro district. Also, a fire was reported on the roof of a five-story building in the Solomyansky district and calls for medical assistance were registered in the Desniansky and Shevchenkivsky districts.
AFP also confirmed powerful explosions in central Kyiv and said that Ukrainian defense systems were countering incoming missiles and drones.
The attack follows an escalation of Russian military operations against Kiev that have targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, railways and residential buildings in recent months.
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited troops in the Zaporizhia region in the southeast of the country on Thursday. Zelensky said that “necessary decisions to strengthen defenses in the Orykhiv region” were being considered, the region that was the launch pad for Ukraine’s failed counteroffensive in 2023.
Ukraine is also embroiled in a major energy scandal that has led to the resignation of two cabinet ministers and sanctions against one of Zelensky’s close associates.
On the southern Zaporizhia front, Russia has announced an expansion of areas under its control, while on the eastern front, fighting has focused on the strategic city of Bukhara, putting pressure on Ukraine’s defenses.
