Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) – Kabul: Portugal and Ireland put on brilliant performances in the final Group F matches of the European World Cup qualifiers. Portugal defeated Armenia 9-1 in Oporto and qualified directly to the World Cup with 13 points as the group leader.
In this match, Portugal quickly took control of the game after Armenia scored an early goal from a mistake by their own defender. The first half ended with goals from Bruno Fernandes (two penalties), Renato Viga, Gonzalo Ramos and Joao Neves 5-1. In the second half, Portugal's structured attacks continued, with goals from the sixth to the eighth, and finally the final goal in the 90th+2 minute by Francisco Conceição, making the score 9–1. This victory showed Portugal's attacking strength and their readiness for the World Cup.
Also in Budapest, Ireland defeated Hungary 3–2 in one of the most exciting games of the group, with a hat-trick from Troy Pruett, to reach the World Cup play-offs. Hungary took the lead initially, but Ireland equalised with a penalty from Pruett in the 15th minute. Barnabas Varga put Hungary ahead again, but Ireland's attacking substitutions in the second half changed the course of the game. Pruett scored another equaliser in the 80th minute, and finally, in the 90th+6 minute, he scored a goal to seal Ireland's historic victory.
With these results, Portugal qualified directly for the World Cup with 13 points, Ireland reached the playoffs with 10 points, and Hungary was eliminated from the competition with 8 points.
