Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: The verdict was issued following a trial in absentia of Hasina. The 78-year-old, who fled Bangladesh after her government fell, was identified as the “mastermind and main architect” of last year’s violent crackdown on student protests, which reportedly left about 1,400 people dead.
According to Al Jazeera, the 2024 protests ended Hasina’s 15-year rule, which was marred by accusations of repression of dissent, mass arrests and extrajudicial killings. Hasina has been living in India since losing power and has not appeared in public or even online.
Hasina's now-banned Awami League party called the trial a "show" and urged supporters to protest the verdict, raising concerns that a new wave of violence could erupt in Bangladesh.
