Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-International Service: A new survey in Japan shows that the country's public opinion assessment of Tokyo-Washington relations has dropped significantly, dropping by about 15 percent compared to last year.
Japan's NHK news network reported that, according to a Cabinet Office survey, only 70 percent of Japanese citizens described relations with the United States as "good," a figure that has decreased significantly compared to last year.
Preliminary results of the survey show that 70.8 percent of respondents evaluate bilateral relations with the United States positively, a figure that represents a decrease of 14.7 percent compared to last year. Last year, this figure was recorded at 85.5 percent.
This is now the lowest level of public approval of Japan-US relations since 2008, when the positive assessment of relations reached 68.9%.
The survey was mailed to 3,000 Japanese citizens aged 18 and over between September and November, of whom only 1,688, or 55.5%, responded.
NHK added that the survey was conducted at the same time as months of difficult trade tariff negotiations between Tokyo and the Trump administration.
A Japanese Foreign Ministry official also said about the results of the survey that the decline in public positive views of bilateral relations with the US could be due to various factors.
