Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Israeli media reported this afternoon (Sunday) that Netanyahu requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog in a 111-page message.
In his request to Herzog, Netanyahu claimed: "The ongoing legal process regarding me has become the focus of intense confrontations, and although I personally want to manage the trial and prove my innocence until a complete acquittal is issued, I believe that the public interest requires a different approach."
US President Donald Trump had asked Herzog to consider pardoning Netanyahu in a letter in early November.
Trump wrote in the letter: “Pardoning Netanyahu could be an important step for the unity of Israel after years of difficulty.”
Earlier, Trump had called for a pardon for Netanyahu in his speech to the Israeli parliament, referring to the release of Israeli prisoners in the Gaza Strip.
In response to Trump’s letter, Herzog noted that according to legal procedures, “anyone seeking a pardon must formally submit their request.” The statement paved the way for Netanyahu to take formal action.
The Israeli prime minister is accused and on trial in three separate cases of corruption, bribery and abuse of public trust.
The main charges include accepting expensive gifts (cigarettes and champagne) from wealthy individuals in exchange for government benefits and attempting to exchange favors with the editor of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper in exchange for favorable coverage.
The most serious case against him is the so-called 4000 case, in which Netanyahu is accused of accepting bribes. He is accused of granting regulatory privileges and facilitations worth hundreds of millions of shekels to the telecommunications company Bezak in exchange for extremely positive media coverage on the news website "Vala."
