Klinovo falls in Donetsk; Russia’s latest major blow to the Ukrainian army
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the country’s armed forces have successfully captured the village of Klinovo in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a step that is part of Moscow’s ongoing advance on the Donetsk front and could affect the balance of power in the strategic region.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The Russian Defense Ministry revealed in an official statement today (Sunday, December 1) that Russian troops have taken full control of the village of Klinovo during an offensive in eastern Donetsk. The village, located near the strategic town of Kurakhove, is considered a key logistical point on the front line of the war, and its capture could pave the way for further advances west of Donetsk.

The achievement comes as Russia has also claimed the capture of another village in the same area, Yantarne, about 10km southwest of Korakhovo, which until recently served as a key logistics hub for Ukrainian forces. The Russian Defence Ministry said the operations were carried out with the support of infantry and armoured units and had forced Kiev forces to retreat from their defensive positions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Western allies to prioritise the delivery of promised weapons, adding: “We are losing key territory, but our resistance is continuing.” The call comes as the Ukrainian military faces a shortage of manpower and equipment, describing the Donetsk front as one of the hottest spots in the war.

Military analysts, including experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), see these advances as part of the “Donetsk Offensive Campaign,” the ultimate goal of which is the complete capture of Donetsk Oblast. Since the beginning of 2025, Russia has seized more than 4,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the region, taking control of cities such as Odyyka and Vokhledar. However, Ukraine claims that it will intensify its defensive operations to regain lost positions.

The fighting, which began in February 2022, has already left thousands dead and severely affected the economies of both sides. The international community, particularly the United States and the European Union, has stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, but peace talks remain deadlocked.
