Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): According to AFP, the number of victims of floods and landslides in large parts of East and Southeast Asia has exceeded 1,000, and the governments of Indonesia and Sri Lanka are trying to provide relief to the affected areas by deploying military forces.
Heavy monsoon rains, accompanied by the intensification of climatic phenomena, affected parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, southern Thailand and northern Malaysia last week, cutting off communication routes and besieging hundreds of villages.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who visited the affected areas in North Sumatra, announced that the government had dispatched three warships and two hospital ships to transport aid to the flooded areas.
The latest floods have killed 502 people in Indonesia and left more than 500 missing, making it Indonesia's deadliest natural disaster since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami.
In Sri Lanka, authorities say at least 340 people have been killed in floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwa. The country has appealed for international help and the military is using helicopters to evacuate people trapped in the mud. The Sri Lankan president has called the floods the worst natural disaster in the country's history.
At least 176 people have died in recent floods in Thailand, and two people have died in Malaysia due to heavy rains.
