UN: Sheberghan city has expanded by 60 percent in the last 20 years
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHCR) announced that Sheberghan city, the capital of Jawzjan province, has expanded by 60 percent over the past two decades, emphasizing that rapid urban growth can only be transformative when accompanied by proper planning and investment.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHCR) described the 60 percent growth of Sheberghan city as “rapid urban expansion” in a post on the X social network, warning that such a process without planning could create serious problems for citizens.

The international organization added that rapid urban expansion is beneficial and transformative when accompanied by proper planning and investment and can meet the needs of future generations.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHCR) has repeatedly warned about the rapid and unplanned expansion of Afghan cities, stressing that urban sprawl can reduce people’s access to urban services and increase marginalization.

The organisation has also called for the creation of sustainable cities in Afghanistan that can last for generations and effectively respond to demographic and economic needs.

According to urban experts, the rapid expansion of Sheberghan without proper planning poses a threat to urban management and the quality of life of its residents. Studies show that targeted investment and urban planning can stabilize the city’s growth and prevent the emergence of marginalization and lack of services. According to observers, international experiences show that cities with proper planning, in addition to increasing the well-being of citizens, create greater economic and social capacities.
