US snowstorm death toll rises to 85
The death toll continues to climb as severe cold continues to grip parts of the South in the wake of a massive winter storm.
Afghan Voice News Agency (AVA) - International Service: The Associated Press reported that the death toll from a snowstorm in the United States has reached 85, citing officials. From Texas to Tennessee, rescue workers are still trying to restore power as a possible storm in the Northeast threatens the Southeast with another polar storm and blizzard. The weather-related deaths were due to hypothermia, suspected carbon monoxide poisoning and accidents involving cars, sleds and snowplows, among other causes. The Mississippi governor's office said four more deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the total number of deaths from severe winter weather in the region to 14. More than 95,000 homes in the state are without power, and temperatures are expected to remain very cold through the weekend. The Tennessee Department of Health confirmed 13 weather-related deaths as of Wednesday. The state is experiencing prolonged cold temperatures amid widespread power outages. More than 93,000 homes across the state are without power. Officials in Nashville said power may not be fully restored until the weekend or longer. Louisiana officials also reported their ninth winter storm-related death on Thursday, a 74-year-old man who died of hypothermia in his home “after a prolonged power outage.”
