Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: A Chinese government official said on Thursday (January 29, equivalent to the 9th of the lunar calendar) that the government expects a record 9.50 billion domestic trips to be made during the 40-day Spring Festival holiday period, up from 9.02 billion domestic trips last year.
For the first time, China has extended the official Chinese New Year holiday week to nine days to boost domestic consumption. The holiday will run from February 15 to February 23, Reuters reported.
The high volume of travel during the 40-day period, during the country's biggest holiday, is often seen as a measure of China's economic health and the efficiency of its vast transportation system.
Government officials said rail travel is expected to reach 540 million trips and air travel is expected to reach 95 million. Chinese officials said transportation capacity on popular routes and areas will be strengthened to meet travel needs.
