Deadly earthquake in Kabul; Family of eight killed in Bagrami district
A spokesman for the Kabul provincial government announced that all the victims registered in Bagrami district following last night’s earthquake were members of a family of eight.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul, Hafiz Basharat, spokesman for the Kabul provincial government, said that the victims included a father, mother, four daughters and two sons from the same family. Another child was also injured in the incident.

The earthquake shook parts of Kabul city and a number of other provinces at around 8:45 last night, along with heavy rain. According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.8 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was recorded 35 kilometers south of Jurm district in Badakhshan province, at a depth of about 186 kilometers.

The Kabul provincial government said assessment teams had been dispatched to the area to assess possible damage and that first aid was being distributed to affected families. The Meteorological Agency warned that the risk of landslides and localised flooding in mountainous areas had increased as the rains continued.

The deadly Bagram earthquake once again highlighted the high vulnerability of Afghanistan’s urban and rural areas to natural disasters. Studies show that the country’s location in an active earthquake zone, combined with substandard construction and heavy rainfall, increases the risk of casualties. Experts believe that strengthening early warning systems, public education and the implementation of building standards can play a key role in reducing the loss of life and property, although implementing these programmes will require serious investment and interagency coordination.
