Security Council vote on Strait of Hormuz resolution postponed
According to reports, the UN Security Council has postponed a vote on a Bahrain-proposed resolution on the Strait of Hormuz until next week.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: Reuters reported, citing diplomats, that the UN Security Council is expected to vote next week on a resolution proposed by Bahrain on the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report, the vote was initially scheduled to take place yesterday, then postponed to today. Several diplomats now say that the vote has been postponed to next week and no new date has been set for it.
The agency added that Bahrain’s mission to the UN did not respond to a request for comment on the reason for the delay.
Earlier, the New York Times reported that the missions of Russia, China and France to the UN are trying to block the issuance of a Security Council resolution to use military force in the Strait of Hormuz.
The draft resolution in question is in its fourth draft after weeks of closed-door negotiations.
The controversial part of the text states that the Security Council authorizes member states to use all necessary means, including military force, to ensure passage and prevent attempts to close, obstruct or otherwise interfere with international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Fu Kong, China’s UN ambassador, said on Thursday that the draft would allow countries to use military force in the Strait of Hormuz at will, without respecting international law, which would only fuel the fire of war.
