Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): As part of the civil society supporting Sweden's democratic and peaceful values, this group has emphasized in a petition, a copy of which was made available to journalists, that granting a parliamentary platform to a figure they believe promotes confrontational literature and interventionist approaches could conflict with Sweden's long tradition of peaceful diplomacy.
Citing international law
The authors of the petition, citing Article 52 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, prohibit attacks on infrastructure essential to the survival of the civilian population and recall that widespread destruction of property without military necessity can be considered a war crime under Article 8 of the Statute of the International Criminal Court. According to them, providing a platform for supporters of such actions is not compatible with Sweden’s international obligations.
Weakening Sweden’s international standing
These Swedish citizens of Iranian origin have warned that inviting Reza Pahlavi could tarnish Sweden’s historical image as a supporter of diplomacy, human rights, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. They have emphasized that Sweden’s international reputation has always been based on a consistent approach to peacebuilding and dialogue.
Damage to Iran-Sweden Bilateral Relations
The statement also states that Iran-Sweden relations have a long history of dialogue and mutual respect, and that any action that is perceived as supporting hostile positions against Iran’s territorial integrity could harm these relations in the long run.
Emphasis on the diversity of Iranian society and human consequences
The authors of the petition, referring to the political and cultural diversity of Iranian society, consider it simplistic to reduce this complexity to a specific trend, noting that many Iranians, regardless of political views, oppose any foreign military intervention. They recall regional experiences where military interventions and destabilization of infrastructure have led to increased poverty, instability, and waves of migration.
Appeal to the Swedish Parliament
The group calls on the Swedish parliamentarians to carefully review decisions regarding the invitation of controversial actors, taking into account the country’s national interests, international responsibilities and human rights principles. The petition states that the Swedish parliament must remain a platform for dialogue, peaceful solutions and respect for national sovereignty.
Submission method and next steps
According to the signatories, the petition will be sent digitally to the secretariat of the parliament and all members of the Swedish Foreign Affairs Committee. It has also been announced that if a significant number of signatures are collected, a request will be made to hold a meeting to deliver the list of signatures in person to the representatives of the relevant parties in parliament.
