Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a video message released on Sunday that Canada's strong economic relationship with the United States was once a strength, but now it has become a weakness that must be corrected.
In the 10-minute speech, Carney talked about his government's efforts to strengthen the Canadian economy by attracting new investments and signing trade agreements with other countries.
"The world has become more dangerous and divided. The United States has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression.
Many of our former strengths, which were based on our close relationship with America, have become weaknesses. Weaknesses that we need to fix.”
Carney said tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump have hit workers in the auto and steel industries. He added that businesses have halted investment, “constrained by the heavy atmosphere of uncertainty that hangs over all of us.”
Carney’s comments came days after he won a special election to form a majority government, as opposition Conservatives pressured him to finalize a trade deal with the United States, a promise he made in last year’s election.
