Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Tehran: Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, explained the latest status of the Iran-US talks, regional developments and Tehran's diplomatic positions in a press conference with reporters on Monday.
No plans for the next round of talks
In response to a question about the next round of Iran-US talks and the claim of sending an American delegation to Islamabad, Baghaei said: "Up until this moment that we are at your service, we do not have a plan for the next round of talks and no decision has been made in this regard."
He continued, referring to the recent ceasefire violations by the US, including the continued naval blockade of Iran and yesterday's attack on one of the Iranian merchant ships, and added: "In such a situation, we see that the behavior and words of the Americans regarding diplomacy are not compatible with each other, and these actions intensify Iranians' suspicions about the Americans' intentions in this process."
Baghaei emphasized: "Iran is carefully making the necessary decisions in this process, taking into account its national interests."
Rejecting the claim of Trump's harsh call with Iranian official
In response to a question about Donald Trump's media behavior in recent days and his claim that he made a phone call to the Iranian side in a loud and harsh tone, the Iranian diplomatic service spokesman denied the claim and said: "This claim can only be considered part of the media narrative." He added: "Basically, such an opportunity has not been provided and will not be provided for anyone who wants to be aggressive or shout at the Iranian delegation."
Emphasizing the rejection of deadlines and ultimatums
In response to a question about the two-week ceasefire being on the verge of ending while negotiations have not been concluded, Baqai stated: "We do not believe in deadlines and ultimatums to secure Iran's national interests." He added: "We did not start this war, we took action in defense of Iran's sovereignty and declared that we will continue to defend our interests as long as Iran's interests require it. Without a doubt, if the US and Israel commit a new adventure against Iran, our armed forces will also respond appropriately and vigilantly and monitor the issues.”
Details of the Iranian and US proposals
In response to a question about the news that the US presented a new plan and that it was transferred to Tehran by the Pakistani army commander, as well as the 15-point plan from Iran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “After the Americans presented a 15-point plan, we also presented our proposal in 10 points.”
Stating that these plans were discussed and reviewed during the Islamabad talks, he noted: “It is natural that in the negotiation process, points of view are expressed by the parties and the parties present proposals to each other. Therefore, it is not accurate for us to use the word “new” proposal.”
Baqai emphasized: “Unlike the other side, our positions are clear. The other side constantly changes its demands, but our positions and views in the negotiation process are fixed, and we know exactly what we want, and we have said from the beginning what is unacceptable to us, and the other side's insistence on them will not change our positions."
He added: "The issues raised in the media about the details of the proposals cannot be confirmed and are media speculation."
Baqaei also said: "Our review of the US proposal, which was transferred to Tehran during the visit of the Pakistani army commander to Iran, is being reviewed."
Pakistan; the only mediator between Iran and the US
In response to the question of whether Egypt is also a mediator in the negotiations, Baqaei denied this and said: "The only mediator in these negotiations is Pakistan, of course other countries are also making good efforts in this regard and are working in this regard, but as I mentioned, Pakistan is currently the mediator."
He added: “It is certainly important for the mediator to maintain its credibility in this process. In the last two cases, the US betrayed the diplomatic process, and in this process, the credibility of the mediator is also being questioned, which is definitely not good for the mediator, nor for international law and related processes.”
No negotiations on defense and missile capabilities
In response to a question about Iran’s oil sales despite the US naval blockade, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “Ask this question to our friends in the Ministry of Oil, but in general, we are using all our capacities in this regard to continue the normal activities of our oil industry and continue selling our oil.”
Araqchi’s tweet; part of the previous ceasefire understanding
Regarding the Iranian Foreign Minister’s tweet on Friday regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in light of the ceasefire in Lebanon and the attacks that have taken place, Baqai said: “In principle, the Foreign Ministry, as a diplomatic institution, does not take any action without coordination with higher-level institutions.”
He continued by referring to Trump’s contradictory tweets about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying that these tweets “have no basis for the diplomatic institution.”
Baqai emphasized: “Mr. Araqchi’s tweet did not represent a new understanding, but rather was part of the understanding that was agreed upon during the ceasefire between Iran and the United States.”
Internal disputes in the United States; The factor of contradictions of Washington officials
In response to a question about the impact of internal conflicts in the United States on the behavior of the country's officials, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman noted: "There is no doubt that internal disputes in the United States are one of the main determining factors in the behavior of American officials. A large part of American society opposes the illegal actions of American officials."
He added: "What we are observing is the external manifestation of internal disputes in this country, which can be seen through contradictions and behaviors resulting from confusion by American officials. This is one of the issues that we have witnessed in the course of diplomatic activities by the United States in the past year, and this in itself is a factor in damaging the diplomatic process."
Current situation; violation of the ceasefire
In response to the question of whether Iran will set preconditions for the next round of negotiations, including lifting the naval blockade, Baqai said: "You can call it a precondition or a condition, but our position is very clear and reasonable. Our basis is Iran's national interests."
He continued: “In relation to the current situation, we are facing a ceasefire violation; during the period when this pause was supposed to be in place, we witnessed a ceasefire violation in Lebanon, and according to them, a naval blockade of Iran was proposed, and an attack on a commercial ship occurred. All of these cases are both gross violations of international law and the UN Charter, and clear violations of the ceasefire.”
Criticism of the European Union’s selective approach to international law
In response to the call by Kaya Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, to respect international law and open the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said: “Our literature is not a literature of mockery; our literature is very serious and reasoned.”
Baghaei noted: “The point is that you cannot use international law as a handy tool; Wherever your interests require it, accuse other countries of violating international law, and wherever your interests require it, easily ignore the violation of international law or become complicit in its violation yourself.”
Referring to the European Union’s actions regarding the genocide in Gaza and the attacks on Iran and Lebanon, he added: “Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the European Union cannot blame Iran just because of concerns about fuel prices, while it knows that the US was the cause and originator of this situation.”
Investigation of the attack on two Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz
In response to a question about the news published about the attack on two Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the summoning of the Iranian ambassador in New Delhi, Baqaei also said: “What is happening in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz these days is the only reason and cause of the US and Israeli military action against Iran, because before this attack, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz was not like this.”
He also noted that competent authorities in Iran are investigating whether this incident was actually committed by our forces or not.
