Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates met with the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Afghanistan, saying that new efforts have begun to attract more financial assistance and create job opportunities for returnees. This is also accompanied by the construction of carpet weaving factories in Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif.

According to the ministry, during the meeting held on 31 July between Maulvi Abdul Kabir, Minister of Refugees and Repatriates, and Mr. Arafat Jamal, Head of UNHCR for Afghanistan, the two sides discussed the situation of Afghan refugees and returnees and the challenges facing them.

Arafat Jamal, the leader of an international group to address the problems of Afghan refugees, has begun efforts to attract more funding and is scheduled to visit Afghanistan in the near future, the ministry said in a statement.

The report also added that in addition to the relevant UN agencies, other international organizations are also working to address the problems of Afghan refugees.

The statement added that the high commissioner of the agency is also expected to visit Kabul soon to closely monitor the situation of the returnees.

In another part of the meeting, the UNHCR chief said that two large carpet weaving factories have been established in Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif, which are expected to provide jobs for hundreds of Afghan returnees.

In the continuation of the meeting, Maulvi Abdul Kabir, while appreciating the UN assistance, said that hundreds of tents donated by UNHCR have been transferred to remote areas and the Ministry of Refugee Affairs has also provided necessary facilities to the temporary accommodation centers.

The minister of refugee affairs expressed concern over the situation of returnees on the other side of the hypothetical line, saying that Afghan refugees in Zakhil and Hamza camps continue to face problems with registration and access to services.

He supported the UN's efforts to create jobs in the country and stressed that he welcomed the visit of officials from international organizations in the migrant sector.
