Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement today (Tuesday) regarding the US attack on an Iranian merchant ship and the hostage-taking of its crew and their families.
The statement states: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran condemns in the strongest terms the illegal and barbaric act of the US terrorist army in attacking the Iranian merchant ship Tusca, which took place on Sunday evening, 30th March 1405 near the coast of Iran in the Sea of Oman.
The statement added: This action, which was accompanied by intimidation of the sailors and crew of the ship and their families, is a maritime piracy and a terrorist act that is not only contrary to the fundamental principles and rules of the United Nations Charter and international law, but is also another example of a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement dated 19 Abr 1405 and is considered an act of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The statement stated: The Islamic Republic of Iran has drawn the attention of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the members of the Security Council of this organization, as well as the International Maritime Organization, to this issue and calls for the condemnation and firm and serious response of international institutions and responsible governments to the criminal action of the United States against international commercial shipping.
The statement added: The Islamic Republic of Iran, while warning of the very dangerous consequences of this illegal and criminal action of the United States, emphasizes the need for the immediate release of the Iranian ship and the sailors and crew and their families.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced at the end of this statement: Without a doubt, the Islamic Republic of Iran will use all its capabilities to defend Iran’s interests and national security and protect the rights and dignity of Iranians. Obviously, the full responsibility for the more complicated situation in the region lies with the United States.
Earlier, Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, called this US action a violation of the ceasefire between Iran and the United States.
Yesterday, in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi pointed to the continued illegal and provocative actions of the United States against Iranian ports and vessels, including the attack on the container ship Toska and the hostage-taking of its crew. He stated: "The illegal behavior of the United States and the contradictory positions of its leaders are incompatible with the claim of diplomacy, and the Islamic Republic of Iran will monitor the behavior of the other side and take the appropriate decision to protect its interests and national security."
