Torrential rains in Brazil; thousands displaced
At least six people have died and thousands more have been displaced in different parts of Brazil after two days of heavy rains in the states of Pernambuco and Paraíba.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The deaths were reported on Saturday in northeastern Brazil, according to officials.

In Pernambuco, flooding and landslides were reported in the state capital Recife, with at least two deaths confirmed in the city. Two people were also killed in the city of Olinda. About 1,500 people were displaced by the storm.

In Paraíba state, the state capital João Pessoa and the city of Campina Grande were among the cities hardest hit. At least two deaths were confirmed in the state and 1,500 people were displaced.

According to Brazil's National Center for Risk Management and Natural Disasters, it has issued 22 emergency alerts during the rains. “Due to the effects of flooding in Pernambuco and Paraíba and the weather forecast for the region, the operational level has been raised to maximum alert,” the center said in a statement.

The government agency also reported that rainfall had eased on Saturday, but urged Brazilians to remain vigilant.

A study published last year by the Brazilian Alliance for Ocean Culture found that rainfall-related disasters in Brazil had tripled from 1991 to 2023.

In February, at least 64 people were killed in floods and landslides in the state of Minas Gerais. In 2024, at least 183 people were killed in floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he had spoken to local authorities in the two states hit by the recent heavy rains. “The government continues to monitor the situation to provide all necessary assistance,” he added.
