Death sentences for former Chinese defense ministers on corruption charges
In the continuation of the anti-corruption campaign in China, two former defense ministers of the country, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to death on corruption charges.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): As preparations for the US and China continue for Donald Trump's visit to Beijing, two former Chinese defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to death on corruption charges.
The state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday that Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were both sentenced to death with a two-year suspension on corruption charges.
The former Chinese defense ministers were expelled from the ruling Communist Party in 2024, and the reason for their expulsion was stated to be "serious violations of discipline," a term used to refer to corruption.
Under existing laws in China, a suspended death sentence is usually converted to life imprisonment if the convicted person does not commit a new crime during the suspended period, and may be further reduced if the convicted person behaves well.
