Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot wrote on social media: Done. The European Union is today imposing sanctions on major Israeli organizations involved in supporting extremist and violent settlement construction in the West Bank, along with their leaders.
According to France 24, the French foreign minister added: "These very serious and intolerable measures must be stopped without delay."
Israel has claimed in response that the planned EU sanctions were "arbitrary and political."
The move, which was taken in response to rising violence and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, had previously been stalled due to opposition from former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an ally of Israel. But his departure and replacement with Peter Magyar appears to have paved the way for Hungary’s veto to be lifted.
EU officials said seven settlers or settler-affiliated organizations would be blacklisted.
At the same time, the EU has agreed to sanction representatives of the Hamas movement.
