Pope awards highest diplomatic decoration to Iranian ambassador to Vatican
Pope Leo XIV awarded the Vatican’s highest diplomatic decoration to Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari, ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The ceremony was held today (Tuesday) in the presence of senior officials and ambassadors based in the Vatican, during which the extensive services and activities of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Vatican on the path of peace, peaceful coexistence, wisdom, tolerance and dialogue were appreciated.

The Papal Order of the Ordine Piano is an honorary order of the Holy See that was established in 1847 by Pope Pius IX. This order is considered one of the highest orders of the Vatican’s knighthood and is usually awarded to ambassadors and prominent figures who have played a role in strengthening diplomatic relations and serving peace and dialogue.

According to IRNA, this award was given to the Iranian ambassador at a time when Pope Leo XIV's recent right-wing stances in condemning the aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran are not unrelated to the efforts of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Vatican to explain the message of peace, justice, and opposition to warmongering.

In the official document granting this award, Pope Leo XIV also wrote, appreciating the worthy services of the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in expanding relations with the Holy See: "We have decided to officially express our gratitude and appreciation. Therefore, we elect and award Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Holy See, to receive the Order of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Piani."
