Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno called for the formation of an independent European army yesterday evening (Tuesday).
In an interview with the news and analytical website Politico, Albares said that the European Union should rely on itself to defend its security by strengthening its military capabilities.
He explained in this regard: "We cannot wake up every morning and ask ourselves what America will do this time?! We need an army, a common defense capability."
The Spanish diplomat said that the Iran war had become a defining moment for Europe in terms of strategic independence, adding: “The European Union must free itself from dependence, lest it be pressured through tariffs, military threats or the consequences of foreign decisions.”
While stressing that Europe’s military buildup should not be seen as an attempt to weaken NATO, Albaris said: “The United States has been strengthening its military for years, but this was not seen as a threat to the North Atlantic alliance.”
Stating that Madrid still considers Washington to be Europe’s historical ally, he added: “Europeans must bear in mind that the US administration, led by Donald Trump, has taken a new approach to transatlantic relations.”
