Xi warns US on Taiwan; any mistake will spark war
In a meeting with his US counterpart in Beijing, the Chinese President warned against any interference by Washington in the Taiwan issue and stressed that any strategic mistake by the US could lead to a direct confrontation between the two powers.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Thursday during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing that the wrong handling of the Taiwan issue could lead to confrontation and even conflict between the two countries and dangerously weaken the state of China-US relations.

According to a report by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Xi Jinping warned that if the Taiwan issue is handled incorrectly, a conflict may occur between the People's Republic of China and the United States, which will lead to a severe deterioration in relations between the two countries.

The talks between the two heads of state were held on Thursday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing as part of Trump's official visit to China (May 13-15).

Stressing that “Taiwan independence is incompatible with peace in Taiwan,” he continued, “a proper handling of the Taiwan issue will help maintain bilateral relations between China and the United States.”

Beijing considers Taiwan an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China and considers adherence to the “one China principle” a necessary condition for countries wishing to establish or maintain diplomatic relations with China.

US arms sales to Taiwan have long been a major point of tension in relations between Washington and Beijing. Formal ties between the central Chinese government and the island province have been severed since 1949.
