EU Ambassador and Senior UN Officials Meet with Bamyan Governor; Emphasis on Infrastructure Development, Public Services, and Support for Returnees
The EU Ambassador to the country, along with senior UN officials, met with the governor of Bamyan province during a visit to the province. The two sides discussed the development of educational and health services, the implementation of infrastructure projects, and addressing the situation of returnees.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Bamyan: Sabur Sighani, spokesperson for the Bamyan governor, told AVA that Ms. Veronica Pohar Boskovic, EU Ambassador to the country, Ms. Susan John Ferguson, UN Women Country Director, and Mr. Stephen Rodriguez, UNDP Country Director, met with Qari Gul Haider Shafaq, Bamyan Governor, and discussed development issues, the development of educational and health services, and the implementation of infrastructure projects in the province.

According to him, the EU Ambassador, while appreciating the cooperation of the Bamyan local administration, emphasized the EU's commitment to continue cooperation in the sectors of development, education, health, combating climate change, and humanitarian aid.

He added that the EU, in coordination with international institutions and local authorities, is trying to implement effective and sustainable projects to improve the economic and social situation of the residents of Bamyan.

In contrast, the Governor of Bamyan, welcoming the continued cooperation of the EU and the United Nations, stated that despite some measures taken, the level of cooperation does not match the basic needs of the people of this province and more attention is needed to infrastructure projects and public services.

He mentioned the completion of the Bamyan-Doshi electricity transmission project, the construction and asphalting of the Bamyan-Baghlan (Shakari Valley) and Bamyan-Dar Suf highways, the provision of safe drinking water for the city and Bamyan University, the implementation of projects related to climate change, and the strengthening of the health and education sectors as the most important development priorities of the province.

The Governor of Bamyan also referred to the situation of returnee refugees from Iran and Pakistan and said that residential settlements have been planned for four thousand families in the province. He called for continued cooperation from the European Union and international organizations to accommodate and address other needs of these families.

The EU Ambassador also assured that the EU, in coordination with the local administration and UN offices, will cooperate in the field of accommodation, education, health services, and provision of welfare facilities for returnee refugees.

Officials from UN Women and UNDP also emphasized the continuation of the implementation of infrastructure, development, and economic empowerment projects in Bamyan.

The European Union has been one of the largest donors to development and humanitarian projects in the country in recent years and, through cooperation with UN agencies, has funded numerous projects in the areas of education, health, energy, water supply and support for returnees.

Observers believe that the simultaneous visit of EU and UN representatives to Bamyan demonstrates the special attention of the international community to the balanced development of the central provinces and addressing the needs of returnees. Studies show that the completion of key projects such as electricity, roads and drinking water can play an important role in improving the economic and social situation of the province’s residents.
