Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Trump has brought up Vance's initial opposition to US military action against Iran, questioned the success of the diplomatic mission led by the vice president in Pakistan, criticized the amount of leave he takes and joked about his tendency to cut off conversations.
Trump has also repeatedly referred to the moment when Vance damaged the Ohio State University national championship trophy during a ceremony at the White House.
The Daily Mail also reported on Tuesday that Vance has become more isolated in the Trump administration after the resignation of US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
Vance’s non-interventionist stance on Iran has put him in a tough spot against Trump, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio has gained more influence, the report said.
The report also suggests that Vance may drop out of the 2028 presidential race to avoid being embroiled in the recent controversy.
Rubio, who has been serving as Secretary of State for months, has attracted a new wave of attention in Republican circles in recent weeks. A new poll shows him leading Vance by a significant margin in a simulated 2028 race.
A new Atlas Intel poll shows Rubio leading Vance by nearly 16 percentage points in a simulated 2028 race. Meanwhile, sources close to the White House say Trump has weighed in on the two in private meetings, and some big donors have also favored Rubio, even though Rubio has publicly said he would support Vance if he were the nominee.
The poll found that 45.4 percent of 2,000 Americans voted for Rubio, compared with 29.6 percent for Vance. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also won 11.2 percent.
Rubio has made some smart moves in recent weeks that have bolstered his standing with Trump and the Republican Party base: He recently made a successful appearance at the White House, where he was able to answer tough questions from reporters (including about the war on Iran). Then, photos emerged of him on Air Force One flying to China, wearing Nike tracksuits; The same outfit that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro wore before he was kidnapped by U.S. forces.
While most former presidents have endorsed their vice presidents in election cycles, Trump has yet to do so. At a White House event, Trump said Vance and Rubio would make a “dream team” for 2028, but he quickly added: “That doesn’t mean I’m endorsing them in any way. I mean, I think it looks like a good combination.”
But behind the scenes, the “Vance or Rubio” question has become a recurring one, according to some Republicans. At events at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, he polls attendees on which one they prefer. At a recent dinner, one attendee told The Hill that many in the room (including some big donors) preferred the secretary of state. He claimed that he “heard a lot of people prefer Rubio,” and that the numbers between Rubio and Vance weren’t even close. Despite the atmosphere, Rubio himself has tried to avoid creating tension. “If Vance runs for president, he’ll be our candidate, and I’ll be one of the first people to endorse him,” he told Vanity Fair last year.
