Qatari Deputy Prime Minister: Temporary fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz are negotiable
The Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar, while announcing Doha’s opposition to imposing permanent fees on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, said that temporary fees could help restore shipping in this key waterway.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Qatari Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said today at an Asian defense conference in Singapore that Qatar opposes permanent legal fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, but temporary fees are negotiable and can help restore normal passage through this key waterway.
According to the Straits Times, the senior Qatari official said that a permanent fee would affect consumers and Qatar opposes any action to impose it; but short-term fees for mine clearance or similar purposes could be considered.
He made these remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue in response to a question about the Strait of Hormuz, which is under Iranian control after the US and Israeli aggression and is one of the issues raised in the negotiations between the two sides, adding, "Qatar and its partners in the Persian Gulf have clearly stated that charging always affects the consumer, so we are against it."
The Qatari deputy prime minister also said that Doha is trying to balance its relations with the US and Iran and is seeking consensus in the Gulf Cooperation Council on a comprehensive strategy towards Iran.
According to Bloomberg, Sheikh Saud said, "We want to have a clear strategy and approach with Iran, regarding all our relations with Iran, including the commercial strategy as well as the political strategy."
Iran has stressed that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will never return to the pre-war state and that ships will be able to pass through with Iran's permission and payment of service fees.
