Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: According to the work program of the United Nations Security Council, the Council will devote a meeting to reviewing the situation in Afghanistan.
In this meeting, Georgette Gagnon, Acting Head of UNAMA, will present the organization’s latest assessment of the political, human rights, economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan to the members of the Security Council.
According to the program, after the presentation of the report, the members of the Security Council will discuss and exchange views on the findings and issues raised in a closed-door meeting.
The Security Council is also scheduled to decide on the extension of UNAMA’s mission on June 17. The members of the Council are expected to agree to a one-year extension of its mission before the end of the current term of the organization.
Reports indicate that China, as the UN Security Council's lead on Afghanistan, is leading the negotiations and consultations related to the extension of UNAMA's mandate.
UNAMA has been operating as the UN mission in Afghanistan since 2002, with the mission of supporting political processes, coordinating humanitarian assistance, and monitoring the human rights situation in the country.
