The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) spoke at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council about the relative stability in Afghanistan, the improvement of the economic situation and the significant reduction in drug cultivation in the country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Georgette Gagnon, Acting Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), stated in the meeting that Afghanistan remains in a stable situation under the current government and that territorial and administrative control has been consolidated throughout the country.
He also added that there is currently no serious armed or political challenge to the current government.
In another part of his speech, Gagnon referred to the economic situation of Afghanistan and said that the country's economic growth has been generally positive and, despite the existing challenges, financial stability has been maintained to some extent through long-term investments in the infrastructure sector.
The UNAMA Acting Head cited the significant reduction and near-eradication of drug cultivation as one of Afghanistan’s major achievements, an issue that he said could have a significant impact on the country’s security, public health and economy.
The UNAMA representative’s remarks to the Security Council reflect the international community’s view of developments in Afghanistan’s internal security, economic and social spheres. However, independent assessments of the country’s economic and social situation remain mixed, with some reports pointing to humanitarian challenges, development constraints and structural problems.
