Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters in Sofia on Tuesday evening: “We have already made it clear that the Ukrainian war will not be resolved on the battlefield. What we are witnessing is a war of attrition and no matter how much weapons are collected, the only result is the loss of human lives.”
According to the Associated Press, the Bulgarian Defense Minister continued to emphasize: “Ukraine needs more people, not more weapons. The country has enough weapons, so we do not plan to provide more weapons to the Ukrainian army.”
Bulgarian Prime Minister Roman Radev, whose government came to power after a decisive victory in April, has opposed arming Ukraine for years and has called for diplomatic solutions instead.
Bulgaria, a member of NATO and the European Union, has been providing military assistance to Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022. The shipments, which were mostly Soviet-era weapons, played a significant role in the early stages of the war. Due to political disputes within the country, the shipments were mainly sent through third countries.
Stoyanov also said it was time to sit down at the negotiating table to achieve a “just peace” defined by Russia and Ukraine.
He added: “Of course, the role of the European Union is very important and it would be difficult to relinquish this role as a mediator, for the simple reason that the European Union has also helped Ukraine in its efforts in the war anyway.”
