Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The North Korean Foreign Ministry announced that the country is a nuclear power and the issue of its nuclear disarmament is “closed forever.”
This position was raised in response to the joint statement by the US and South Korea on the need for North Korea to denuclearize after the Nuclear Advisory Group meeting.
Pyongyang announced in a statement that the accusations and positions of Washington and its allies are “baseless and ineffective,” and emphasized that the discussion of the country’s nuclear disarmament is no longer relevant and belongs to the past.
The North Korean Foreign Ministry also argued that the deployment and transfer of advanced US weapons to South Korea and Japan, along with exercises simulating scenarios of nuclear weapons use, have forced the country to strengthen its deterrence and national security.
The statement said that the creation of a "nuclear shield" is a natural measure to counter foreign interference, maintain national sovereignty, and ensure regional security and stability.
North Korea conducted its first nuclear test on October 9, 2006, and according to international estimates, the country has about 50 assembled nuclear weapons and has produced enough fissile material to make about 70 to 90 nuclear warheads.
