Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): In an interview with CNBC, Donald Trump criticized the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, calling the process disgraceful and describing the preservation of Bagram air base as simple and possible.
He said: "Preserving Bagram was easily possible and the United States should not have lost this strategic base."
The US President also claimed that the withdrawal could have been carried out "with dignity and strength," but the previous administration's mismanagement ruined this opportunity.
Trump, who had previously criticized the Biden administration for abandoning military equipment and important bases during the withdrawal from Afghanistan, referred to his repeated request to hand over Bagram Air Base again in another part of the interview, warning: “If Afghanistan does not return Bagram Air Base to those who built it, namely the United States, bad things will happen.”
This implicit threat by Trump comes at a time when the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has previously categorically rejected this request. Senior officials of the Islamic Emirate, citing the Doha Agreement and the principle of Afghanistan’s national sovereignty, have emphasized that no foreign military forces will be allowed to re-deploy in the country.
In this context, Alireza Bekdali, the head of the Iranian embassy in Kabul, had previously welcomed this decision in the midst of the Ramadan war, referring to Afghanistan’s opposition to handing over the base again. He considered this stance of the Islamic Emirate a sign of “prudence, rationality, and adherence to principles” and appreciated it.
Bagram Air Base, which had become one of the most important bases in the region during the US military presence in Afghanistan, was fully taken over by the Islamic Emirate after the withdrawal of foreign forces in 2021 and is now operated under the full control of the country's forces as a symbol of Afghanistan's national sovereignty.
