UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has nominated Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as his special envoy to Afghanistan to the UN Security Council, sources told Ariana News.
The Security Council is expected to decide on the move, the sources said.
If approved, Rabab Fatima will replace Rosa Ottenbayeva, whose term ended in September last year.
Rabab Fatima is a veteran diplomat from Bangladesh and will serve as the UN Deputy Secretary-General and High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Countries and Small Island Developing Countries from 2022.
He was previously Bangladesh's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and its ambassador to Japan. Fatemeh has also held senior positions at the International Organization for Migration and the Commonwealth Secretariat and has worked in the fields of migration, human rights and international development.
