Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Ismail Baqaei, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, announced that talks between the Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Oman were held in Muscat on Saturday with the aim of coordinating arrangements for managing traffic and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to him, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, traveled to Oman at the head of a political, legal and technical delegation and discussed with his Omani counterpart, Badr Al-Busaidi, solutions for ensuring shipping security and safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
Baqaei added that in these negotiations, the issue of maritime security was discussed, respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal countries, international law, and the provisions of Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that any future arrangements for managing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz should be formulated in consultation with the two coastal countries and taking into account the developments of recent months, especially the war imposed by the United States and the Zionist regime and its security consequences on shipping.
He also announced the agreement between Tehran and Muscat to continue negotiations at the political, technical, and legal levels in order to reach a common understanding on ensuring shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Baqaei continued by stating that a delegation from the government of Qatar was also present in some of these negotiations; a country that has played a role in the mediation process between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States in recent months.
According to the fifth paragraph of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed on June 18 by the presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, Tehran has committed to temporarily provide the necessary arrangements for the safe passage of commercial ships from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa, and at the same time to hold talks with Oman about the future mechanism for maritime administration and services in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law and the sovereign rights of coastal countries.
