Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed on Thursday that his government had denied visas to two American officials who were planning to travel to the country on charges of trying to interfere in Brazil’s October presidential election. The move comes weeks after the Brazilian government also withheld formal approval for the new U.S. ambassador.

Polls show Lula, who has leftist leanings, leading by a narrow margin over his right-wing rival, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump. The Trump administration has sought to influence political contests across the region, as well as in Europe.
Meanwhile, another diplomatic row has strained relations between the two countries. For weeks, the Brazilian government has been withholding official confirmation of Daniel Perez, a Florida congressman and close ally of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was nominated by Trump to be the US ambassador to Brazil on June 1.
Brazilian officials have called the US move to nominate an ambassador without Brazil’s approval, a common diplomatic step, “disrespectful” and a “violation of protocol.” As a result, Brazil will be left without a US ambassador ahead of its elections.
