Head of Disaster Preparedness and Combating Office emphasizes accelerating assistance to flood victims

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The press office of the General Directorate of Disaster Preparedness and Combating Office announced in a press release that Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, Director General of this office, discussed the situation of those affected by the recent floods and strategies to accelerate the assistance process in a coordination meeting with representatives of a number of institutions active in the field of disaster management and humanitarian aid.

 

Representatives of the International Rescue Committee, the Development and Technical Assistance Organization, the Japan Reconstruction and Reconstruction Association, the Care Institute, the National Youth Service Organization, Catholic Relief Services, the Danish Committee for Refugees Assistance in the Country, and the Akbar Office were present at the meeting.

 

Referring to the effects of climate change and signs of the El Nino phenomenon, Mulla Nooruddin Turabi said that the occurrence of natural disasters, especially floods, has increased and there is a possibility of their consequences intensifying in different parts of the country. He added that he had traveled to a number of affected provinces and closely assessed the situation of the victims.

 

The head of the Disaster Preparedness and Combating Office called on all institutions to implement the process of providing assistance to the victims as quickly as possible, using existing facilities and capacities, and at the same time, to present their new plans to donor institutions to attract more financial resources.

 

At this meeting, representatives of the institutions also presented reports on their current activities and programs and emphasized continuing cooperation with the Disaster Preparedness and Combating Office in dealing with victims of natural disasters. They also announced the preparation of new plans to attract more financial resources in order to expand humanitarian aid.

 

At the end of the meeting, emphasis was placed on strengthening coordination, regular exchange of information, and effective implementation of relief projects. It was also decided that statistics and information related to casualties and damages caused by natural disasters would be made available to partner institutions through a specific authority from the Disaster Preparedness and Combating Directorate.
